Can you convert a stereo audio output to a coaxial digital audio input?

Question by Brian D: Can you convert a stereo audio output to a coaxial digital audio input?
I’m looking to buy a home theater system and the one i’m looking at only has a Coaxial Digital Audio input. However, I want to connect my record player to it, which uses a stereo audio cable (one from the record player to the phono preamp, and another from the preamp to receiver. Is there such a cable that can convert/connect the stereo output of the phono preamp to the coaxial digital audio input of the home theater?

look at a receiver that has analog inputs. The cable or device you are looking for is a receiver. It seems the one you are looking at will not cut it.

Okay, when you mentioned coaxial output you have to remember you are trying to run analog into digital well other than a Digital-to-Analog converter and I don’t think they have turn tables like that out I could be wrong. a record player only play in stereo which is mostly left/right channel being that, it will be hard to get your record player to play through a digital source [if I am correct on what you are trying to do]. But I would recommend getting a Compact Disc recorder I bought one back in 2003. and what I did was transferred most of my analog music to CD, Now the way you do this is by using the CD D/A Converters to record. The CD Recorder hooks-up in the back just like a tape deck record/playback now it comes with Digital Outputs but for digital to digital sources only. This will only take your vinyl and convert it to CD by using the CD Recorder’s analog for recoed Just make sure if you choose this option you read the manual carefully and use the analog for recording your vinyl to CD, this is the only way that I could think of with Analog trying to go Digital. I hope I was a help.

Be careful here. A record player does not output analog L/R signals. It must hook up to a special input on a receiver designed for the phono output.

If you are looking at a “home theater” system that is one of the cheap, thin box’s with a receiver and DVD player built in – RUN AWAY. These systems are often crappy, single purpose systems with limited connection options.

(This is why you are having trouble connecting your record player).

The ‘system’ you buy should have a stand-alone receiver that is a big, black box like the units sold separately in the stores.

Make sure it has a phono input in addition to all the others.
